Herman Gould with the "It Takes a Village Award", presented
by the University of Arizona College of Education

Dr. Herman Gould was honored recently at the University of Arizona College of Education, as an outstanding school volunteer.  The "It Takes a Village Award," was presented to four outstanding volunteers in Tucson's schools during the hooding ceremony for doctoral and master's degree candidates.    Since moving to Tucson, Herman has been volunteering in literacy and workplace skills classes for at-risk high school students at Catalina High Magnet School.

Because of the connection between vision and learning, he wrote and was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Pearle Vision Foundation to provide eye examinations and glasses to students living in poverty.  He has conducted vision screening on 224 students, 101 of whom have received vouchers for eye examinations and glasses.  Herman and Marge and their non-profit organization are now pursuing a larger grant to extend the project to 750 additional needy students at the school.
